Resumo: Climate change and emissions of greenhouse gases are issues that currently relate to socioeconomic and environmental debates. In the industry sector, there are different activities contribute to the global warming, especially the activities related to the oil & gas industry. Considering the premises of sustainable development, forecasts and studies on the possible oil peak, governmental and market regulations and technology innovation will lead this industry to a new business model. This article seeks to discuss and report on the outlook for the oil and gas in a low carbon economy. Among the currently available alternatives for low-carbon policies, there are already certain laws and policies, and incentives and financing in the biofuels industry and the urban mobility. Other sources of ethanol production, equipment optimization, the expanded use of renewable energy sources, conservation or more efficient use of energy resources are also considered important ways to reduce GHG emissions in the energy sector without sacrificing economic development. However, this is only the beginning of a process that will continue over the coming decades, aiming to stimulate debate for a global consensus for the collective construction of proposed public policies consistent with research for the repositioning of the world economy face the challenges of climate change. This task must be shared between public and private efforts to responsible, participatory and innovative actions.
